The Muscovy duck is one of the few farm animals that were originally domesticated on the American continent where they are indigenous.

While most domestic ducks descended from the mallard, Muscovy ducks are a separate species. Wild Muscovy ducks still live in the United States and Mexico.
Muscovy ducks don’t quack, in fact they are very quiet — probably this is why in Hungarian the Muscovy duck is called the mute duck (néma kacsa). On the other hand they seem to have some sort of Muscovy duck sign language made up of head nodding and various other gestures.
The Mulard duck that is the main type of duck farmed for meat and foie gras in North America is an infertile hybrid, bread by crossing the male Muscovy duck and the female Pekin duck (domesticated mallard).
