The emperor newt, also known as the crocodile newt is a species of newt from China.
The emperor newt is a highly toxic amphibian, so in spite of its bright coloration it does not get eaten by predators.
Emperor newts can be kept as pets in a suitable terrarium set up that includes both dry land and water areas. Emperor newts can live 15 to 20 years in captivity. Most emperor newts in the pet trade are probably still wild caught. So there is work to be done to breed this species in captivity, as the wild population of emperor newts is threatened by humans who catch newts for the weirdest of purposes including uses as Chinese medicine.
