The guanaco is a South American camelid, the wild ancestor of the domestic llama.

Unlike domestic llamas, guanacos all tend to have the same brownish fur color. Otherwise they are basically the original form of the same animal as the llama.
Just like domestic llamas, guanacos are well adapted to life at high altitudes and their physiology reflects that. See the post on llamas on this blog for details.
