The African spurred tortoise is the largest tortoise in Africa.
The African spurred tortoise in the picture lives in the Szeged Zoo in Hungary and I have seen it wandering around very slowly what looked like an office building on the zoo grounds.
In the wild the African spurred tortoise lives in Africa around the southern edge of the Sahara desert. African spurred tortoises grow up to about thirty-odd inches long and can live over a hundred years. African spurred tortoises eat mainly grass and other plant parts but they will eat small animals such as insects.
Some people like to keep an African spurred tortoises as pets in spite of their large size.
