The Patagonian mara is a large rodent that sort of looks like a giant rabbit or hare.
Like their name suggests Patagonian maras come from Patagonia. They are a near threatened species. Nevertheless some people keep a Patagonian mara as a pet.
Most zoos tend to have Patagonian maras, I took the pictures above in the Szeged Zoo. They are usually kept in somewhat larger herds (at least dozens of animals) possibly to simulate wild conditions as maras are highly social animals that live together in large groups.
