Well, we earthlings all know that the answer is 42.
Yet everything that lives, and sometimes even things that are not alive at all, seem to ignore it.
They pretend that the answer is not known, and they just pursue their own goals relentlessly on their own will.
This sense of purpose is referred to as teleonomy.
