The Patagonian mara is a large rodent that sort of looks like a giant rabbit or hare.

Like their name suggests Patagonian maras come from Patagonia. They are a near threatened species. Nevertheless some people keep a Patagonian mara as a pet.<\/p>\n

Most zoos tend to have Patagonian maras, I took the pictures above in the Szeged Zoo<\/a>. They are usually kept in somewhat larger herds (at least dozens of animals) possibly to simulate wild conditions as maras are highly social animals that live together in large groups.<\/p>\n
