Although formerly they were considered to be a single species now different variations are recognized as separate species.<\/p>\n<p>The babirusa in the picture is housed in the Indomalaya outdoor exhibit of the <a href=\"\/places\/canada\/ontario\/toronto\/toronto-zoo\/\" title=\"Toronto Zoo\">Toronto Zoo<\/a>, right next to the <a href=\"\/2014\/03\/26\/malayan-tapir\/\" title=\"Malayan Tapir\">Malayan tapir<\/a> and the <a href=\"\/2014\/03\/25\/indian-rhinoceros\/\" title=\"Indian Rhinoceros\">Indian rhinoceros<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_731\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Babirusa2.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-731\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Babirusa2.jpg\" alt=\"A picture of a babirusa.\" width=\"400\" height=\"286\" class=\"size-full wp-image-731\" srcset=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Babirusa2.jpg 400w, \/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Babirusa2-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-731\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The same babirusa from a different angle.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I can only assume that it is a female, or a very young animal, from the lack of tusks.
