Keas are in fact reported to be so smart that some people consider them equal to the African grey parrots, if not smarter.

The kea is also a naturally curious bird whcih made it really hard to take a picture of a caged specimen because the birds kept coming close to to check out what I was doing where I could not get a clear line of sight.

It is also good to keep some distance from a kea — and not reach in through the bars to the cage — just in case.

In the wild the kea is a predator that attacks much larger animals than itself.
Keas have been reported to dine on the flesh and fat of sheep that were still alive.

Smart does not mean compassionate.
